Using Resin with Wood: Tips for River Tables and Inlays

Updated on Mar 21, 2025

Working with epoxy resin on wood projects requires attention to moisture and compatibility.

Check Moisture Content:

  • Wood should have a moisture content below 12%.

  • Wet wood can off-gas and create bubbles or poor adhesion.

Seal Before Pouring:

  • Apply a thin sealing coat to the wood using the same resin.

  • Let it cure and lightly sand before the deep pour to prevent bubbles.

Pour Depth and Heat:

  • Use a deep-pour resin for fills greater than 10–20mm.

  • Pour in layers if using standard epoxy to avoid overheating and cracking.

Expansion Considerations:

  • Wood expands and contracts—choose flexible epoxy or allow for expansion gaps if the piece will experience temperature changes.

Finishing:

  • Sand and polish after full cure.

  • Apply a protective topcoat if required.
